WSET Level 3 Award in Wines Time Management:

Before the Exam

WSET 3 Time Management - Have a plan

WSET 3 Time Management TIP 1

Book the course 3 months before the first class.

We suggest booking your course at least three months in advance so that you have enough time to prepare. You can usually find a class plan online, so you'll know when you'll have to attend class. Let's say you're taking a course that starts in September and lasts for two months. In this case, it's important to book the course in June, giving you enough time to get all the materials you need, like the textbook, specification document, and study guide. We believe it is essential to study at least 75% of the textbook before your first class.

WSET 3 Time Management TIP 2

Make a realistic study plan.

To excel in your WSET Level 3 exam, it's crucial to start by creating a realistic time plan. Many students make the mistake of underestimating the amount of time needed to prepare and end up cramming, which is usually ineffective. Memorizing all the details requires time, and your prior knowledge plays a significant role in determining the appropriate timeframe. For instance, if you have significant experience with wine, such as working in a well-stocked wine shop for the past 5 years, you might need only 2 months for preparation. However, if you are new to the wine world or have limited experience, you might need up to 5 months to memorize all the information. To assist you in your preparation, ViniRama has created four study plans for 2, 3, 4, and 5 months, organized by week and containing essential tasks to keep you on track. Downloading the FREE WSET Level 3 Award in Wines Study plan will enable you to stay motivated and track your progress as you work through the material.

WSET 3 Time Management TIP 3

Come prepared to class.

Many students think that attending the APP classes is enough to prepare for the WSET 3 exam. But, that's almost never the case. You need to know that the WSET 3 classes aren't just a repetition of the textbook. They're interactive sessions where you can get answers to tough questions, learn how to deal with difficult topics, and get exam technique guidance. To make the most of these classes, it's important to come prepared. This means studying the relevant material in advance (ideally with flashcards), practising multiple-choice and short written answer questions before class, and having questions ready to ask during class. That way, you will be able to actively participate in the discussion and benefit from your educator's knowledge. Take the initiative to prepare, be involved in class and increase your chances of success.

WSET 3 Time Management TIP 4

Reschedule your exam.

After assessing your knowledge and creating a study plan that suits your needs, it's essential to evaluate whether your scheduled exam date is feasible. If not, there's no need to worry, as most APPs offer multiple exam dates throughout the year. We recommend that you contact your APP promptly and arrange a more convenient date. Selecting the right exam date is critical to your success. It will not only make your preparation process smoother, but it will also prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and stressed. By choosing a date that suits your schedule, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment and pride throughout your study period. So, be sure to adjust your plans as necessary to ensure that you're fully prepared for the exam.

WSET Level 3 Award in Wines Time Management:

During the Exam

WSET 3 Time Management during the exam

Time Management is crucial as well during your WSET 3 exam. The exam is split into two sections. Part 1 comprises 50 multiple-choice questions, each worth one point. Part 2 contains four short-written answer questions, and each question carries 25 marks. You'll have 120 minutes, or two hours, to complete the entire exam.

To manage your time effectively, it's a good idea to have a plan in place for the day of the exam. We recommend allocating 20 minutes for the multiple-choice questions, 20 minutes for each of the short-written answer questions, and setting aside the final 20 minutes to review your answers and address any gaps.

Although 20 minutes may appear to be a short duration for the multiple-choice questions, with adequate preparation and the use of flashcards, you should be able to complete them within that timeframe, and even possibly wrap up in 15 minutes. For the short written answer questions, it's important to take your time and read the question thoroughly before responding. You need to demonstrate your understanding and knowledge in a clear and concise manner. If you need more guidance on answering these questions, check out this article.

Have fun studying and good luck!
