How to use the flashcards
We recommend studying in the following order:
-
Read one chapter of the textbook entirely.
-
Work through the corresponding flashcards in a “progressive” order, until you master them!
-
On a piece of paper, draw a map of the studied region indicating the key areas, varieties, and geographical features.
-
Practice answering Multiple Choice and Short Written Answer Questions.
-
Move to the next chapter.
-
Plan larger revision sessions regularly: revise all the past chapters by selecting the relevant flashcards decks and configuring your study session in a “random’ order.
Study session configuration.
"Progressive" selects cards from decks in the order they appear. So, you will not see cards from the 2nd deck until you've mostly mastered the 1st deck. Once you've moved to a later deck, cards from earlier decks can still repeat occasionally.
"Random" will select from a pool of cards across all selected decks. The repetition priority is still given to the lower-confidence items, but new/un-seen cards may be chosen from any position in any of the selected decks.
Confidence rating
We recommend rating the flashcards you study as follows:
-
5 = HIDE. If you don’t want to see the card again, if you feel that it was very easy and you are sure that you will never forget it, you can rate the card 5. It will still occasionally repeat just to be sure you still know it, but you will see it less and less often until it never comes up again.
-
4 = NAILED IT. 4 is what you should aim for. If you know the topic perfectly but do not want to hide the card and see it again in later learning sessions, then you should consider marking 4. It's okay if this means that your study statistics will not show a 100% mastery rate. There is no reward for 100% confidence. You are not doing yourself any favours by giving 5s to everything you master at any given time. If you rate all the cards in a deck with a 4, the confidence rate in your statistics will be 80%.
-
3 = ALMOST THERE. If you knew most of the answer (between 51% and 90%), missed a nuance, or if the answer was correct but you had to think about it too long, then rate the card 3.
-
2 = CAN DO MUCH BETTER. You should rate 2 if got up to 50% of the answer right. You should also consider a 2 of you thought you knew the answer, but it turned out to be wrong or if you guessed correctly.
-
1 = ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE. If you are totally clueless about a concept, mark it a 1. The algorithm chooses a 1 (or a brand-new card) about 60% of the time, so you should see that card again very soon. Remember, the more 1s you give, the less likely you will see new cards. So, if you feel that you are seeing too many new concepts, even though you're not yet confident enough in the current ones, consider rating more cards a 1.
